.....

  • Isaac B. Sherman age 30 to 39. (p.164)
  • Two males under age 5.
  • One female age 5 to 9.

1840 Jackson County, Virginia Census p.223:[4]

  • Isaac B. Sherman age 40 to 49.
  • one male under 5.

  • two females 10 to 14.
  • one male slave 10 to 23.
  • one female slave 10 to 23.
  • Eleven people in household.

(For some strange reason, his wife, Samary Samantha Sherman is not listed in this census). But many of the children of Isaac, Samary and Nancy Dewitt appear to be in this 1840 census.

Possible children in this 1840 Jackson Co., Census are:

  • Henry Clay Sherman would have been about 12.
  • Sarah Sherman would have been about 9.
  • Elizabeth Sherman born ?
  • Lyman Stedman, Jr. would have been about 13.
  • Maria Deford would have been about 7.
  • Giles Sherman would have been about 4.

Henry Sherman age 50 to 60, and family are also listed in this 1840 census.

__________

Are we related to William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891)?

Isaac Baldwin Sherman's daughter, Amanda (Sherman) Widmer (1846-1920) was given a book and original pictures of William Tecumseh Sherman (see picture above, in our family for about 150 years now.). Amanda also handed down a book from the Sherman family. This book and pictures of William Tecumseh were handed down to Amanda's daughter, Flora (Widmer) Rose (1885-1972). Flora (Widmer) Rose gave me this book and pictures in 1960's. Flora said we are supposedly related to William Tecumseh Sherman (Jan)

I have found no connection to William Tecumseh Sherman, yet.

Does anyone have a portrait of Isaac B. Sherman? As he died in 1852, I assume there is no tin type picture of him; as tin types didn't become common until 1850's.
