Revolutionary War Service: Joseph was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, having enlisted at Cape Elizabeth as appears by the National Muster Rolls of that period. Spouses: 1) Esther Hamlin 2) Margaret Hall.[1]
Joseph Roberts (the fourth with that name) was born 1756[2] on 6 Feb at Brentwood, New Hampshire.[3]
He participated in the struggle for national independence, enlisting prior to his majority, having run away from home.[4]
He married first to Ester Hamlin[2] 28 Nov 1777.[5]
After residing in Standish for a time Joseph Roberts removed to Buckfield.[6]
According to the census of 1790, Joseph Roberts, Jr., Jonathan Roberts, Jr., John Roberts, William Doble and James Jordan were residents of Buckfield. The census of 1790 gives seven in William Doble’s family, four males and three females; James Jordan’s family five males and two females; Joseph Roberts, Jr., seven in the family, three males and four females; Jonathan Roberts, three in the family, one male and two females; and John Roberts three in the family.[6]
About the year 1799, he became the first settler in Brooks, Waldo County, Maine, residing there for the remainder of his life. He first selected a spot about a mile north of the village and cleared the land for the first home. Here, Joseph and his boys cleared up the farm and in a few years built a saw mill and a grist mill.[6]
Joseph married for a second time to Margaret (Hall) Forbes[2] in 1801.[7][8]

" ... Joseph Roberts, born at Brentwood, N. H., Feb. 6, 1756, enlisted from Windham, for eight months in Capt. Wentworth Stuart's Co., Col. Edmund Phinney's Regt. Enlisted again for one year in Capt. Wentworth Stuart's Co. (afterwards commanded by Capt. Jonathan Sawyer), Col. Edmund Phinney's 18th Continental Regt. Discharged at Fort George. He enlisted as a private in Capt. Nathan Merrill's Co., in June, 1779, for four months in the Penobscot Expedition. ... " page 520 Windham in the past
He passed away in January 10, 1843 in Brooks.[6]
