Soldier Benajah Rambo served with Hammond's Regiment of Light Dragoons, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

3163. BENAJAH RAMBO was born about 1753. He married RACHEL ADAMS, the daughter of James and Sarah (Huff) Adams of Abbeville, South Carolina. Benajah served in the South Carolina Militia under Col. Samuel Hammond during the Revolutionary War between 20 Aug 1783 and 31 Aug 1786, and his widow submitted a pension claim for the period. In the 1790 Census of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Benajah was listed as Binago Rambo having two males under the age of 16, one male over 16, one female, and one slave. His wife Rachel relinquished her dower rights in Jan 1786 to William Dobey, in Oct 1786 to Samuel Doolittle, and in Jul 1787 to Fielding Reynolds. Benajah, Rachel, and his mother Mary Rambo conveyed land to Edward Mitchell on 22 Nov 1787. On 10 Nov 1790 Benajah Rambo obtained a 480 acre tract of land in the Orangeburg District on the branch of Goodland Swamp Waters for slightly over 11 pounds sterling money. Benajah died by 1798 and in Jun 1798 Rachel Rambo named her children as follows: 31631. JAMES RAMBO, b. after 1775 31632. LAWRENCE RAMBO, b. about 1780, d. before 1848, m. Mary Jones 31633. RACHEL RAMBO, b. before 1798, m. 1) Benjamin Pierce, 2) William Weir 31634. MARY (POLLY) RAMBO, b. before 1798 31635. SARAH RAMBO, b. before 1799, possibly m. Edward W. Gill.

The pension application of Rachel Rambo was dated 21 Nov 1803 and reads as follows: "To the honorable president of the senate and the other honorable Members of the house of senate of the state of South Carolina, now met at Columbia, and sitting in session the humble petition of Rachel Rambo showeth that her Husband Benager Rambo Decst, was a soldier in the state Troops of this state in a Ridgement commanded by Lieut. Col. Samual Hammonds and by some neglect or other was not returned, and by that cause has never received any compensation for his service as more fully will appear from a certificate annexted to a petition to the House of Representatives and your petitioner prays that your honourable Body will grant her and her orphans such relief as in your wisdom may seem right and as in duty Bound will ever pray."

Edgefield County, South Carolina records Deed of Gift dated 22 Jun 1798 Rachel Rambo to Her Children. I Rachel Rambo of the St. and County aforesaid do send greeting to all people to whom it shall concern: Know ye, that I the said Rachel Rambo for and in consideration of the love, goodwill and affection which I have and do bear to my loving children, James Rambo, Laurence Rambo, PolleyRambo, Sarah and Rachel Rambo of the Co. and St. aforesaid, have granted and by these presents do freely give and grant unto my said children, their heirs, executors and administrators all my my estate both real and personal; Also the part coming to me at my Mothers death agreeable to my Fathers James Adams will, to be divided equally among them all. To have and to hold the said estate to them and their heirs, Executors and Administrators, from henceforth as their property absolutely, without and manner of condition. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal, this 22 day of June in the year of our Lord 1798 and the 22 yr. of the Independence of the United States of North America Rachel Rambo

Delivered in the presence of Littlebury Adams Sarah Adams ... Proved 8 Oct 1798. "Personally appeared before me, Littleberry Adams, and made oath that he was personally present and saw the within named Rachel Rambo sign, seal and as her act and deed deliver the within named instrument of writing for the purposes herein contained, and that the deponent and Sarah Adams were witnesses thereof. Sworn before me 8th Oct. 1798. Richard Little, J.P. Recorded 8th Day of Oct. 1798".

Deeds: "21 Nov 1787: Benajah Rambo & Rachel, his wife & Mary Rambo, widow, to Edward Mitchell, all of Edgefield Co. SC, for 10 pounds, sold 152 1/2 acres on Horns Creek & described by Plat dated 7 Mar 1787 by Wm Coursey, Mathematician. S/ Benjah Rambo, Rachel (X) Rambo, Mary (O) Rambo. Wit: James Kind, John Huffman Whereas: by a grant 8 Mar 1755 to Joseph Nobles for 200 acres on branch of Stevens Creek called Toblers now Horns Creek & whereas said Joseph Nobles died & left son & heir, called Joseph Nobles, who conveyed 30 Oct 1765 said 200 acres to Lawrence Rambo, father to said Benajah Rambo & husband to said Mary Rambo & said Lawrence Rambo is since dead & willed land to Mary, his widow, during her life & her deceased to said Benajah Rambo. The above 152 1/2 acres being part of said 200 acres ...". "17 May 1792: Samuel Doolittle & Ann, his wife of Edgefield Co. SC to Stephen Tillman of same place for 200 pounds, sold 72 acres being part of 200 acres originally granted 8 Mar 1755 unto Joseph Nobles & conveyed to Laurence Rambo, dec'd., by L&R 29 & 30 Oct 1765 & by LW&T of said Rambo was given to his son Benjah Rambo who conveyed to said Doolittle by L&R 8 & 9 Sep 1786 being on North side of Horns Creek. Said land adj. N by Peter Carnes; NE by said Stephen Tillman & Edward Mitchell; Marshels Creek."

As reported in Edgefield County, South Carolina, Minutes of the County Court, 1785-1795: Benajah released 300 acres to William Dobey. He released 73 acres to Samuel Doolittle. He released 100 acres to Fielding Reynolds on April 5, 1787. (Land adjoined Wm. Dobey) This land was later sold to William Wash who is said to have married into the Dobey family at some point (not proven yet). On March 20, 1800, Wash sold this land to Little Berry Adams. This was part of original land granted to Laurence Rambo. (Edgefield Deeds 27:425)

When Benajah Rambo was born in 1753 in Orange, North Carolina, his father, Capt., was 40 and his mother, Mary, was 36. He had three brothers and five sisters. He died in 1798 in Edgefield, South Carolina, at the age of 45.
