Jane Potter was born November 4, 1798 likely at Codhill Farm (Highcliffe) near Guisborough. She is the 4thth child of Ralph Potter and Jane Williamson-Potter. She was Christened November 7 1798, at St. Nicholas Anglican Church in Guisborough.
Little is known during her childhood, other than Ralph quit Codhill Farm. There was a move to Haughton le Skerne, Durham as that is where their last child was christened.
Jane married John Huntonon November 24, 1825 in Durham England. Both were single at the time.
John and Jane had several children:
William Hunton – Christened June 9, 1828 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England (likely born a year or two before – and Christened when they moved to Great Ayton)
Ellen Hunton – Christened August 3, 1828 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England
John Hunton – Christened November 8 1829 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England
Joseph Hunton – Christened June 17, 1832 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England
Mary Ann Hunton – Christened August 3, 1834 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England
Thomas Hunton – Christened March 12, 1836 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England
Jane Hunton – Christened July 22, 1837 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England
Elizabeth Hunton – born around 1839 (1841 Census)
Alice Hunton – born around 1841 (1841 Census)
In the 1841 UK Census, John (a Cartwright) and Jane are now in Bridge Road, Stainton, Stockton, Yorkshire, England. They are there with 7 of their 9 children.
Jane’s Husband dies April 19, 1943 in Gateshead, Durham.
On the 1851 UK Census, Jane is listed as a Widow, is now living on Garbutt Street, Stockton on Tees. Jane’s sister Alice has joined her, as she undoubtably is helping the home. Jane has several small children and listed as a Muffin Maker/Pauper.
Jane is next listed as a Confectioner, on Albert Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England in the 1858 Post Office Directory.
In the 1861 UK Census, things have turned around for Jane. She is still on Albert Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool as a Confectioner and Muffin Maker. She has a few of her children living with her. William is a Warehouse Labourer, John is a Baker, Mary Ann is a Milliner, and Thomas is a Shoe Maker. Elizabeth does not have a job listed, but Alice is married to John Boyes, and he is a Seaman.
Jane is still in Stranton, West Hartlepool by the 1871 UK Census. Still widowed, and a Muffin Maker. Her children John & Mary Ann are still with her. John is a Baker, and Mary Ann is a Bakers Assistant.
By 1881 UK Census – Mary Ann is now the Head of Household – Jane is 82. Wolviston, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.
Jane died Age 85 - March 11, 1882 in Wolviston, and is buried in the St. Peter’s Churchyard. The memorial stone also mentions her husband John (died April 19, 1843 Age 50, Jane died Mar 11, 1882 with the epitath “She did what she could”, one of her sons John died May 11, 1898 Age 69, and her daughter Mary Ann Hunton-Hill died Dec 24, 1911 Age 77.
