John was born on 20 April 1752 in Scituate Rhode Island. He was the son of John Potter and Phebe Arnold.[1]
John and Jemima had 11 children. [2]
After his father's death, he and his wife conveyed his interest to his father's Coventry land to one of his brothers in Coventry. John and Jemima were of Bennington VT at the time.*
A soldier of the Revolution.
He is said to have been a close friend of Aaron Burr, but left politics when he found it unpleasant. ** Burr was in the legislature in Albany after the Revolution, so perhaps John was also connected with the Assembly in those years. (Speculation of CAdams)
John was an Innkeeper in Hoosick NY, which is directly across the border from Bennington VT. He died accidentally near his home and business, at a place now called Potter Hill. There is a memorial on the road to him, evidence that he was a man of importance in his time.
John was accidently killed near his farm in Hoosick, New York on 24 June 1806. [3]
