1776 Project
John Ogletree performed Patriotic Service in North Carolina in the American Revolution.

John Ogletree (Senior), possibly the son of William Ogletree.

Death: 1822 Wilkes, Georgia[1]

John provided Patriotic Service during the American Revolution as a Captain of Patrollers.[2]

Discrepancy

Estimated Dates of Birth; marriage

  • 5/12/1778 "Rental Agreement, Roger Atkinson to John Ogletree, for 303 acres of land on Cobe (Cobb) Creek in Caswell County, N.C[3]
  • In Georgia Genealogical Magazine (#63-64, Winter-Spring, 1979) p 10 under "Augusta Land Court Proceedings, 5/26/1784," there is a record of John Ogletree, Sr., John Ogletree, Jr.,and William Ogletree's petition for Headrights, land grants, in Franklin County, Ga.
  • To file/execute, surely, John, Jr. and William had to be 16-18 years or older; thus children births before 1764-1766. Presuming John Jr was oldest, John Sr. would be born in 1740's timeframe and possibly as early as 1725. No proof located for a Virginia Birth.
  • Controversy on "1st or 2nd spouse Ann" as Dau of Miles vs possible Sister (See also cross reference notes/sources at Miles Duncan-4187 confirms likely sister vs daughter)
  • See Also http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/ogletree/1058/ (original link not working as of 3 Feb 2021) Controversy re John and Ann Duncan John Ogletree and wife FRANCES of Dinwiddee County sold the land in Brunswick County. John is next picked up in Caswell County, NC and his stay there and on into Georgia is well documented. (By Daniel Ogletree June 09, 2003)

Marriage(s)

See Research at Ogletree-84 and Miles Duncan

Marriage Estimate 1760 2 or 3X
Ann vs Frances Unknown (in 1772) (or both) (Ann presumed "Ann Duncan" -- Disputed - likely sister of Miles vs his Daughter[4])
Piety Phillips and John Ogletree admrs Jan. 7, 1795." Piety Philips, widow of William Phillips married John Ogletree shortly after the death of William [5]

Research Notes

  • wife Frances -- In 1772 John Ogletree and wife FRANCES of Dinwiddee County sold the land in Brunswick County. (geography almost makes it certain that the Ogletree in these transactions are one and the same. John is next picked up in Caswell County, NC and his stay there and on into Georgia is well documented.)
  • wife Ann - There is reasonable doubt (by Rhoda Fone and others) that John possibly never had a wife named Ann Duncan. This error was apparently based on a Wilkes County transcription error and was first picked up by Professor J.P. Mott and carried on by others (Rev. Wiley D. Ogletree, Hope Hull Ogletree and others). Mr. Ptomey was the first to question it and the postings of Rhoda Fone has proven it. Duncan researchers have disputed it from the beginning.

Ogletree-355 and Ogletree-84 appear to represent the same person because: they share similar vital statistics, the same parents and the same siblings.

Sr.-137 and Ogletree-84 appear to represent the same person because: "Sr." as a surname is a clerical error. Based on John Ogletree's will and the children named, these are the same person.

John's last name, Ogletree, needs to be removed from his first name field and placed in the Last Name field. Currently, his last name is listed as "Sr." Thanks! Sandy
