Biography

Captain Stephen Neal served with Prince Edward County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Name also seen spelled Neall. He spells his name Stephen Neal in his will Ameila Co., VA, WB 3, p. 13 (21 Dec 1795).

Stephen Neal was born 12 Apr 1741 on Beaver Pond Branch of Deep Creek in Amelia Co., VA. His will is dated 14 Apr 1795 and recorded 21 Dec 1795 in Prince Edward Co., VA (WB 3, p. 13).

In his will he names the 8 following children

In his will, Stephen refers to his "beloved wife Edith". However, in the Beaver Pond Neals of Virginia, Carl B. Neal reports that a Miss Ella Graves Thompson of Leasburg, NC, wrote that her mother left a written record that her ancestor Stephen Neal married a Priscilla Hawkins and that she was the mother of his children. Confirmation of that is in the DAR Records. In addition, several of Stephen's children have names that were in the Hawkins family of Prince Edward Co., VA (Laban, Philemon, and Zachariah) and Stephen's son Zachariah gave 2 of his sons Hawkins as a middle name (Benjamin Hawkins Neal and Philemon Hawkins Neal). Benjamin Hawkins was the father of the above mentioned Laban, Philemon, and maybe Zachariah Hawkins. Stephen married Priscilla Hawkins first, and later married an Edith.
