Biography

Mary (Muir) Hand is one of twins.

Mary Ecclesiastes and twin sister Annie Muir were born 5 October 1846 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland, the daughter of Daniel Muir (1804 Manchester, England - 6 October 1885 Kansas City, MO; son of John Muir and Sarah Highs) and Ann Gilrye (1813 Scotland - 1896 Portage, Wisconsin). [1]

Daniel Muir first married Helen Kennedy, in 1829. He married Ann Gilrye on 28 November 1833. They had twin daughters, Mary E. and Anna, born 5 October 1846. Anna died on 15 January 1903 in Portage, Wisconsin, and is buried at Silver Lake Cemetery.
In 1850, the Muir family lived in Buffalo, Wisconsin. All members of the household were born in Scotland. The household included Daniel Muir, 46, a farmer, with $1800 in real estate; his wife Ann, 37; their children, Margaret, 16; Sarah, 14; John, 13; David, 10; Daniel, Jr., 7; and twins, Mary and Ann, 4.[2]
In 1860, the Muir family lived on their farm in Buffalo, Wisconsin. All members of the household were born in Scotland, except for the youngest child, who was born in Wisconsin. The household included Daniel Muir, 55, a farmer, with $5000 in real estate and $800 in personal estate; his wife Ann, 48; their children, Margaret, 25; George, 22; David, 19; Daniel, 16; twins, Mary and Ann, 13; and Joanna, 8, born in Wisconsin.[3]

Mary Muir and Willis Lorenzo Hand were married on 30 October 1878 in Portage, Wisconsin. They had at least three children: Wheeler Gilrye Hand, 1880-1951; Howard Willis Hand, 1883-1958; and Helen Florence Hand, 1886-1978.

Mary died on 15 April 1928 in Corvallis, Washington. [4] She is buried at Crystal Lake Cemetery.[5]
