Daniel Merritt was born at York, Maine, 26 Mar 1756, the son of Daniel Merritt and Mary Gowell; [1] [2] died at Columbia, Maine, c Jan-Feb 1807, aged 57; [3] married (1) c1782, Hannah Cates, born at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, 17 Mar 1765, the daughter of Samuel Cates and Ruth Thorndike; [4] married (2) 1795, Hannah Allen, the widow of John McDonald. [5] [6] [7] After Daniel's death, she married (3) at Columbia, cApr 1809, his brother, William Merritt. [8]
This man served in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Line (often referred to as the 7th). The regiment saw action at Saratoga, Cobleskill, Cherry Valley, and during the Sullivan Campaign. He enlisted from Machias, ME under Captain Allen on 1 August 1777. He served in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment from 1 August 1777 to 31 December 1779. Daniel was transferred to Capt. Lane's Company in 1779. Merritt served in the military from 7 August 1779 to 7 September 1779 as a private in Capt. Hall's Company on the Penobscot Expedition.
