Biography

John was born in 1873 in Illinois. He was the son of Joseph Marion McWherter (1846–1928) and Sarah Jane Conrad (1849–1936).

The 1880 Census[1] shows him at age 6 in the home of his parents in Chatham, Sangamon County, Illinois.

He married Florence Fulton Shofner on 1 Apr 1893 in Sangamon County, Illinois.[2] Their only child:

The 1900 Census[4] shows him at age 26 with his wife Florence in Capital Township, Sangamon County, Illinois. This census states that his wife is the mother of 1 child with none still living. He is a salesman for a grocer.

He married Sarah in 1903. [5] It does not appear that they had children.

The 1910 Census[5] shows him at age 36 with his wife Sarah in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. He is a foreman at a wallpaper store.

His World War I Draft Registration Card,[6] signed on 12 Sep 1918, shows him as a self employed merchant living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but his nearest relative is Sarah F. McWherter in Peoria, Illinois. He is described as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

The 1920 Census[7] shows him at age 45 as a lodger in the household of the widowed Mrs. J. B. Huett in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. He is the proprietor of a paper & paint company. He is marked as married but his wife is not present.

He married Katie Wray Huett on 25 Jul 1921 in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. [8] [9] It does not appear that they had children.

The 1930 Census[10] shows him at age 56 with his wife Kate and several lodgers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Katie died in 1934.[11]

He married Dirce M.

John was in the City Directory in 1940 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma:[12]

His wife Dirce died in 1943. [13] [14]

He married Bessie Pearl (Petty) Courmier on 20 Apr 1946 in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.[15] It does not appear that they had children.

The 1950 Census[16] shows him at age 76 with his wife and a step-daughter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. He does bookkeeping for a radio shop.

He died on 10 Oct 1955 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,[17] [18] [19] and is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.[20] Excerpted from his obituary in the Springfield paper: [21]

"John McWherter, of Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Springfield, died Monday night in his home in Oklahoma City. He was 82 years old.

Mr. McWherter was born Oct. 18, 1873, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McWherter. He was employed as head bookkeeper for the Harnett Wall Paper Co. at the time left Springfield. He was a member of St. Paul's lodge, 500, A. F. & A. M.

He is survived by his wife."

Excerpted from his obituary in the Oklahoma paper: [22]

"John McWherter, 81, retired founder of the Grand Paint and Paper Co., died Monday evening at his home, 1737 NW Park. McWherter's health had been failing since January from a heart condition that became critical last Friday...

Born in Springfield, Ill., McWherter came to Oklahoma City about 1920 and established the paint firm at 116 W. Grand ave. He retired from the business in 1942.

McWherter was a member of the Presbyterian church and a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie, of the home, and six step-children."
