I have, in my possession, copies of signed statements from both of the widows of John McCoy, in order to obtain pension benefits, as he was a private in the war of the Revolution, having served on board the Frigate Raleigh from 1776 to 1777. I also have a copy of a statement made by Rhoda (McCoy) Brown, daughter of John and Comfort McCoy. Rhoda states that in 1817, she moved with her husband and father, and their families to Virgil, New York where they resided together. She further states that her father soon began an affair with Betsey Elwell and the two eloped and were not heard from again. John and Betsey moved to Georgetown, New York and started a family. They had a son, Andrew, from whom I am descended. It appears that Comfort had been fraudulently drawing payments, claiming herself to be Betsey (Elwell) McCoy. All of these documents were found among the belongings of my grandmother, Dorothy (McCoy) Fulton, after her death. I will work on properly citing these sources.

What is the source of his having served in the Rev War?

I see a tree on ancestry listing Betsey on pension in La Crosse Wisconsin in 1853. Entry lists James McCoy private but doesn't state where he served.
