Family History Notes

"William B. Marshall, was born on a Saturday, Sept 26, 1789 in Warren Co., NC, the third born child, of Isaac and Mary (Foote) Marshall.

William B. Marshall and family migrated from Iredell Co., NC to Monroe Co., TN, before 1830, exactly when has not been pinned down. It appears from records that perhaps, brother Joseph Marshall was the first in Monroe Co., TN, with Brothers Henry F. and William B. Marshall coming later.

Willam B. Marshall married Mary Ann Martin (abt 1796 NC-aft 1880 TN) on 6 Jan 1817 in Wilkes Co., NC. She was living with Richard Spencer Marshall and family on the 1880 Census in Monroe Co., TN.

The Richard Spencer Marshall, wife Sarah Caroline Blanton, family migrated to Travis Co., TX Dec 1881 and Mary Ann (Martin) Marshall was not with them. There is indication of a grave next to William B. Marshall and it is my thinking she is buried there in the Eleazer Cemtery.

The family lived in the P. O. Tellico Plains area, which means of course that they got their mail there. It is beautiful country there, and easy to imagine that life could have been, at least in part, very good there."

COMMENTARY: Having many relatives from Tellico Plains and having first hand information and experience, I can tell you, Tellico Plains was not a very peaceful place. First, it was the home of the Cherokee Indians. This article explains the history of the Cherokees in Monroe County, Tennessee: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monroe_County,_Tennessee

Something a lot of people do not know about is the massacre of black people in Tellico Plains during the early 1900's. My Grandmother, Lula Atkins Hawkins, Lula Hawkins told me that the blacks were murdered, and her family hide some to move them from the county. My family offered Christian burials to those who were murdered in our family cemetery, New Providence Missionary Baptist Cemetery: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2147155/new-providence-cemetery. I have been to the cemetery many times and have seen the unmarked stones of the murdered black people. And, I met a black man who was a professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee that I discussed this issue with. He verified the murder of blacks in Tellico Plains and knew what I was talking about.

Also, my ex-husband Richard Lindsay, who is an architect, was called in the early 1980's to come to Tellico Plains to design a public Library. I was excited to hear what Rick had to say of the meeting. Rick told me the mayor was wearing a gun. I was surprised, because Tellico Plains looks like a peaceful, little mountain town. Far from that! Rick said the Mayor told him he had to wear a gun because of the roughnecks who would get into gun fights. And, he added that my family, The Atkins, helped him more than anyone in the community. That's because we have very deep roots there and are a very righteous and helpful family.

My connection to the Marshall's: My grandmother, Lula Atkins Lula Hawkins married Harry Hawkins whose mother was a Marshall, Paralee Emily Hawkins, Paralee Marshall Hawkins whose father and mother are: Robert Marshall and Nancy McLemore.
