Note NI496She came west to Utah with her parents in 1848. She was recorded as Maria Luce on the 1851 census and as Antoinette Luce on the 1856 and 1860 censuses. She might have been the Marie Antoinette Luce who married William Newell. They were the parents of Nathan Newell, born 25 January 1866 in Utah. She was a widow in 1900, living in Alicel Pct, Union County, Oregon, reportedly born October 1845 in Maine. The 1900 census appears to show her name as Martha A., living next door to her son Nathan. 1

At the time of her death in 1913 she was married but living at in the household of her son Nathan at 175 Social Hall Avenue in Salt Lake City. She was buried in her parents' plot at Salt Lake City Cemetery (Plot F, Block 12, Lot 10). Her death certificate, recorded her under the name Marie A. Newell Johnson. It lists her father as John Luce, born in Maine, and her mother as Mary Wheeler, also born in Maine. It gives her birth date of Oct. 10, 1845 in Illinois. She was 67 yrs. 7 mo. 19 days. She died of "Diabetes Albluminuria, with contributions "La Grippe". The certificate was signed by her son Nathan F. Newell.
