Biography

1776 Project
Private John Linscott Sr. served with 2nd Regiment, Cumberland County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

About the same time [1765?] John Linscott settled on the adjoining farm [Joshua Linscot], now occupied by Ernest Weeks, and raised a large family. From these two have descended all the Linscotts who have ever lived in Jefferson. Centennial celebration of the town of Jefferson, Lincoln County, Maine, U.S.A., August 21, 1907; page 32.


Birth

John Linscott was born in 1735 in Damariscotta, Lincoln, Maine to Ichabod Linscott (1707-1763) and Sarah Bowden (1715-after 1763) as the third of ten children. His parents were married c. 1731 in York, York, Maine. Ichabod would have been about 24 and Sarah would have definitely been 16.

  1. Ichabod Linscott Jr. was born c. 1731 in York, York, Maine. He married Esther Westcoat (1735-1761) on 14 October 1755 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire. Ichabod died after January 1761, as the son who was named after him was born in October 1761.
  2. Abraham Linscott was born c. 1732 in York, York, Maine. He died after 1763, as he was on the tax rolls of Maine at that time.
  3. Joshua Linscott was born c. 1737 in Damariscotta, Lincoln, Maine. He married Abigail Knowlton (1740-1834) in 1763. He died on 4 January 1832 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA.
  4. Isaac Linscott was born c. 1741 in Damariscotta, Lincoln, Maine. He married Miriam Whittier (1744-1824) on 8 December 1766 in York, York, Maine. Isaac died in 1824 in Ames, Athens, Ohio, USA.
  5. Jacob Linscott was born c. 1743 in York, York, Maine. He died 1822 in Brownfield, Oxford, Maine, USA.
  6. David Linscott was born and died c. 1750 in York, York, Maine.
  7. Theodore Linscott was born in October 1756 in York, York, Maine. He died on 15 February 1838 in Sanford, York, Maine, USA as is noted on his pension record.
  8. Mary Linscott was born on 16 September 1759 in York, York, Maine.
  9. Nathaniel Linscott was born c. 1763 in York, York, Maine. He died in 1820 in Sanford, York, Maine, USA.

Marriage and Family

He married Hannah Clark (1744-after 1788) c. 1770 in Lincoln County, Maine. She may have married again after John's death to Alexander Fairbanks before 1797 as the land record mentions her as Alexander Fairbanks' wife.

  1. Nancy Linscott was born c. 1771 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine. She married John Johnson in 1796.
  2. Hannah Linscott was born on 12 January 1774 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine. She married Deacon Joseph Ross (1776-1853) on 30 April 1797 in Nobleboro, Lincoln, Maine. Hannah died on 28 February 1831. Hannah died on 28 February 1831.
  3. John Linscott Jr. born in 1774. He died on 18 May 1842.
  4. Mary Polly Linscott was born c. 1778 in Hollis, York, Maine. She was married on 30 November 1797 in Ball Town, Lincoln, Maine to Jeremiah Linscott (1776-1821), son of Joshua Linscott and Abigail Knowlton; so they were first cousins. She died after 1850 when she appeared on the census in Hollis, York, Maine, USA.
  5. David B. Linscott was born c. 1779 in Maine, USA. He married Sarah Beldin (1778-1850) on 5 March 1799 in China, Kennebec, Maine. David died on 25 November 1845 in Belmont, Waldo, Maine, USA.
  6. Patience Linscott was born on 13 July 1780 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA. She married William Ross (1780- ) on 13 December 1810 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine. Patience died in 1849.
  7. Ezekiel Linscott was born on 6 September 1781 in Damariscotta, Lincoln, Maine, USA. He married Salome Collamore (1798-1884) on 10 July 1818 in Nobleboro, Lincoln, Maine. Ezekiel died on 20 August 1868 in Appleton, Knox, Maine, USA.
  8. James Elijah was born on 18 June 1785. He married Lucinda Clapp on 4 November 1806. James died in February 1860 in Lincoln County, Maine, USA.
  9. Esther Linscott was born c. 1786. She married Jacob Johnson on 24 December 1805 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine. Esther died before 1816 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA.
  10. Susannah Linscott was born on 15 February 1787 in Damariscotta, Lincoln,Maine, USA. She married Jesse Rowell in 1812. Susanna died on 9 May 1865 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA.
  11. William Linscott was born on 8 September 1789 in Lincoln County, Maine, USA. He married Matilda Lydia Jones (1794-1847) on 26 December 1811 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine. William died on 23 December 1848 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA.

Military Service

He enlisted in July 1775 to guard the seacoast. He enlisted again in June 1779 to Camden, Lincoln, Maine and in July 1779 for the Penobscot Expedition, which was probably the first 3 companies that made the assault on the heights. On 7 July 1779, Americans organized to dislodge the occupying forces of the British in the area of the present day town of Castine, Maine. John was a Pvt. in Capt. Nehemiah Curtis' Company according to the muster rolls.

Death

John died after 1808 in Jefferson, Lincoln, Maine, USA. He had settled in Jefferson a little after his brother and lived on the adjoining farm c. 1807.
