Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Lewis II was a North Carolina colonist.
1776 Project
Rev. William Lewis II served with 2nd South Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

William was born in 1740 in Bertie county NC to William Lewis and his wife Janet Banks-Blewett. His grandparents were Isaac Lewis and Margaret "Mary" Hooker. Isaac's parents were Edward Lewis and Bridgette Browne Lewis.

He married Mourning Van Pelt of Bertie County, NC (She is the Granddaughter of Hendrick VanPelt & his wife Margrietje DeHart of Bertie Pct. NC & New York).

He married 1763 and they had issue, who were listed in his will:

William (1765, Dobbs, NC- b.1811)
Mary "Polly" (1767, Dobbs, NC- c.1835)
Sarah "Sallie" (1769, Horry, SC- c.1835)
James (1771, Horry, SC - 1818)
Isaac (1775, Horry, SC - 1838)
Hardy (1777 -Horry, SC - b. 1847)
Jonathon (1779 Horry, SC - 1849 Marion SC)
Joel (1781 Horry, SC - 1853 )
Elisha (1783 Horry, SC - c. 1820)
Zipha (1783 Horry, SC - 1854)
Patrick (1791 Horry, SC - c. 1854)

There is some confusion to him having 2 other daughters; Mourning & Pennsylvania

Additional contradictory evidence is that neither Pennsylvania nor Morning was named in the father's will. Further, the 1790 census record lists only two females in William's household. One would be the wife, Mourning Van Pelt Lewis, the second, Zilpha, age about 7. The older daughters, Polly and Sally, would have been 23 and 21 and probably married. William and Mourning did have granddaughters, Pennsylvania, daughter of Jonathan Lewis and Mourning, daughter of Hardy Lewis. This may be the source of the confusion.

Sometime after marriage he and Mourning moved to Dobbs County, North Carolina where his father had purchased land (Dobbs Co. Book 5).

2023 3 6 Note: That William Lewis ll, who served under Lt. Col. Frances Marion in the area at that time was actually serving the man aka "the Swamp Fox". The legends are true as even the Jarrell family was involved in that scenario. My Grandfather John Quincey Piver/Jarrell told me about the swamps and how they hid and traveled for miles in it to escape the hound's scent. per Piver-37

2024 4 15 This file is the one I inadeptly missed for a 1740 Wm. Lewis. I apologize for my error. I do carry his DNA. Yet, after looking at his ancestry on this file, I may be wrong, but I see no ties to the Lewis/Warner lines. I am of both lines of Lewis. The fact that Van_Pelt lines are present is a separate ancestorial direction. I am not a professional -per Piver-37

Lewis-39110 and Lewis-13095 appear to represent the same person because: Both William's have the same birth year, death date, and death location. Both also served in the 2nd South Carolina regiment during the American Revolution.
