Biography

Mary was born on Christmas Day (December 25th) 1768 to Richard Lafon and Mary Upshaw. ^[1]

She married Hezekiah Adkins after October 30th, 1784. They had eight children during their marriage. ^[2]

Mary passed away on March 3rd, 1855. ^[1]

Research Notes

The marriage record of Mary and Hezekiah is shown with different dates depending on which source is looked at. The Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800 shows a date of 2 Oct 1784 and Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940 shows 20 Oct 1784. Yet another record on Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940 shows 30 Oct 1784. The same date, the 30th, is also shown on a record at Family Search while the other above are from Ancestry. Because the marriage was before 1800, it does not appear on the West Virginia Culture website.

Ronnie Adkins book, "The Adkins Family of Wayne County, West Virginia, Also Cabell, Lincoln, and Boone" records the following on page 8: "Hezekiah married 2 October, 1784 in Montgomery co. Virginia Mary Levon b 25 December, 1768. Many researchers have Mary's name as LeFon while others have Levin and Lemon. The original marriage Bond,-now on file in Montgomery County, clearly shows the name to be Levon. The marriage is recorded in marriage register book A page 4. Parents are not shown and Samuel Cecil Sr. was security." On page 11 of his book he provides a partial copy of the marriage record but it doesn't show the date. The actual marriage bond, posted here under the photos section, shows the date as the 30th. The marriage took place after this date.
