Joseph King was born 23 Sept. 1764 in Oysterponds, Long Island,[1] named Orient in present-day Southold Township. He was the son of John King[2] and Abigail Brown.
He died 11 Jan. 1851, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor.[3]
His wife Elizabeth's grandparents, Constant and Abigail Havens, were of Sag Harbor.
Elizabeth's entry in Tuttle-Tuthill lines in America:
"ELIZABETH TUTHILL Aug 1764 Hashamomack, LI da Nathl 1731;m Jos KING 23Sep1764 Oysterponds, LI LTV 1 Tuthill 1804."
Research Notes
Joseph's children Narcissa King, Tuthill King, Nathaniel King, Abigail King cannot be linked to him directly through birth, marriage, or death records. Census records link Narcissa and Nathaniel to his wife Elizabeth, and also to his grandson Charles, son of Abigail. A census record links Charles and Tuthill. Directory records and articles link Tuthill and Nathaniel and Charles. Joseph's brother Gilbert's will names his niece Narcissa.
Without birth records for the children, it is unclear where Joseph and Elizabeth were living and when. Their son Tuthill was born in 1804 in Genesee County or Geneseo, New York, according to a published biography and an obituary. (Tuthill was a well-known millionaire in Chicago.) So it appears that Joseph and Elizabeth had moved away from Southold by that time. The petition of January 1835 for the estate of Joseph's brother Gilbert states that Joseph was residing "somewhere in the State of Ohio" at that time.
A gravestone for Joseph King in Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, Suffolk, New York is sometimes assumed to belong to this Joseph. The death date is 11 Jan 1851, the age at death 87. The 1850 census shows Elizabeth with their daughter Narcissa and family in New Windsor, Orange, New York. Was Elizabeth a widow already, or a visitor, or was she living apart from her husband?
