Biography

Aaron Wiley was born on July 20, 1812, according to his tombstone. [1] FindAGrave has his birthplace as Ohio, as do the censuses, but one of his son's death certificate has him as being from Connecticut. I am not sure who the informant was in relation to the deceased or why they would think Aaron was from Connecticut.[2]

In 1840 Aaron was enumerated in Monroe, Licking County, Ohio, in a household which contains two adults between 20 and 29 years of age and two young boys under 5.[3]

In 1850 he was enumerated with his wife Lydia and their five children in Johnstown, Licking County, Ohio. [4] His occupation is "cooper" in the "miscellaneous wood products" industry.

In 1860 the family lived in Wayne, Kosciusko, Indiana. [5] They had seven kids at this census, plus a 24-year-old man named Henry Bobert living with the household. His relation to the family isn't noted, but it does say he was from Germany.

Aaron is listed in Kansas's records as a Civil War veteran.[6] He was a private in Kansas's infantry and served in Company A, Regiment 13. He received gunshot wounds in his right shoulder and right leg above the knee during his service. He served on the Union side.

I have not yet found Aaron's family on the 1870 census population schedule, but he is listed on the agricultural schedule in Wakarusa, Douglas, Kansas.[7]

Kansas did a state census in 1875, wherein Aaron was recorded with his second wife, Minerva, daughter Lula Belle, and a 16-year-old male named T. G. Weeks, in Oxford, Kansas.[8]

In 1880, Aaron was still living in Oxford, Kansas, with Minerva and Lula Belle.[9]

Aaron was appointed a postmaster in 1880. [10]

Aaron died on March 31, 1889, at the age of 77 years, after a "scrofulous disease of long continuance" according to his obituary. He was buried in Oxford cemetery in Kansas. His obituary notes that Aaron was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. [11]
