During the Revolutionary War, he served in 1777 as a Private under Captain Hezekiah Wells in Colonel Roger Enos' Regiment. In 1777-1778 he served under Captain Watson[3][4], then Captain Bissell in Colonel Samuel B. Webbs's Additional Continental Regiment.[5] He was allowed a pension for his service.[6]
On 30 Sep 1782, he married Mary Blair at Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.[7]

In 1810, the Kilbys resided at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, where John was listed in the census as a head of household.[9] He is still listed at the same location in the 1840 census, then 79 years old.[10]
John Kilby passed away after 18 Dec 1839 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.[1] According to U.S. Pensioners, 1818-1872, he died 12 Feb 1845.[11]
