Biography

(___) Keen was born in London, on London Bridge, about 1578, according to a family record written by his great-grandson, Hezekiah Keen.[1]

He was the unknown husband of Martha Keene, who died before she emigrated with his family to New Englandon the ship Confidence which sailed out of Southampton, England, 24 April 1638. The family consisted of his 60 year old wife, Martha, his 17 year old son, John, Jr., his 13 year old daughter, Elizabeth, and his other children, Martha, Josiah, and Sarah.[2]

The family settled in Hingham. There were two sons who remained in England.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Did not Die: 14 Nov 1649, Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts. * Where did this date come from? Could this be John Keayne JOHN, Hingham, d. 14 Jan. 1650, of wh. no more is kn. but that his name appears sometimes Cane.[3]

I believe this profile has been conflated with John Keene-616 who is the actual person who sailed on the confidence. No John Sr. sailed with the family unit. I have updated the biography. but think the given name should be changed to Unknown and the date of death changed to before 1638 The birth estimate is probably ok, based on Martha's age. Objections?

I haven't seen the Great Migration Directory you refer to, but I've seen elsewhere that John Sr. was a mariner. Isn't it possible that he was part of the crew and not listed as a passenger with the rest of the family? I have yet to find a crew list of Confidence, but admittedly, I'm just starting to look.

Sources that indicate there was an elder John Kene/Keene/Kane/Kaine/Keayne/CAINE on board:

  • Filby, P. William, ed. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s. Farmington Hills, MI, USA: Gale Research, 2012 (via Ancestry). Indexed on Ancestry as John KENE, John KEENE, John KANE, John KAINE, John KEAYNE, and John CAINE.

Martha the wife has an entry in the Great MIgration Directory, John the husband/father does not. so have to assume he did not come. See her profile for sources

According to my records, Master of the ship "Confidence" was Capt. John Jobson. It sailed from Southampton, England on April 11, 1638.

Joshua, I'm looking at a different site, but shows the same list of passengers: I see in the list of Keene:

John Keene, age 17

Martha Keene, age 60

Eliza Keene

Martha Keene

Josias Keene

Sarah Keene.

No mention of a husband for Martha Keene.

We need a source for John Keene the supposed father and wife of Martha and also for the biography that is now present.

I have recently discovered an old record that suggests that Martha Keene's maiden name was "Mey" Allan Clemons

Interesting. Looking at ship records for The Confidence on April 24th 1638, I'm not seeing John Keene but I am seeing his wife, Martha Keene. http://immigrantships.net/v4/1600v4/confidence16380424.html

It refers to a Martha Wilder, but I'm not sure if that's the wife Martha or a daughter Martha.
