Biography

Mary Ellen Jones was born in 1942. She was the daughter of Gwilym Jones and Helen Ringland. She went to Washington and Will Rogers Elementary School, and McAlester Jr and Sr High schools.

While in High School, Mary Ellen was very active in speech and debate. She was a Worthy Advisor of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls in her Senior Year. She also was a very enthusiastic cheerleader her Senior Year. She won many awards and accommodations while participating in Mr. Eaton’s Speech and Debate classes.

Additionally, Mary Ellen was also one of ten finalists for the National Betty Crocker homemaker contest. Upon graduating high school, she attended Oklahoma University and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. After graduating from OU, Mary Ellen taught school in Van Nuys, California, where she conducted many plays gaining critical acclaim. She attained a Master's Degree in Education from San Diego State University and eventually moved back to McAlester after her father's death in 1968.

She ultimately went to work at the Navy Ammunition Depot and was awarded many accommodations for her work and supervision. After her mother, Helen Jones, died in 1977, she relocated to New Orleans where her brother lived in Metairie, Louisiana and worked in a management position at Energy Company of Louisiana.

She opened and managed the largest truck stop in Slidell, Louisiana with ECOL and was given the responsibility in training future managers. In the mid-eighties she moved to Atlanta, Georgia where the home office for ECOL was located. In 1987, Mary Ellen met and married her husband, Garfield Trumble and for 35 years they were best friends and soul mates. Gar and Mary Ellen traveled and lived in many states after they were married, one being Nashville, Tennessee, where Gar was hired as Chief of Security for the Tennessee Titans and Mary Ellen managed all the gift shops at Opryland.

As noted by Gar, the best place they ever lived was on ninety-six acres in New Hampshire, which is where he will relocate to in the near future. Mary Ellen is survived by her husband Garfield Trumble in North Carolina, her brother Bernard Jones (Julie) in Gilbert, Arizona and many living members of the 1960 McAlester High School Class. She passed away in 2022.
