Born to Thomas Jones and Martha (nee Morris). Samuel was the last of his brothers and sisters born in Wales. He was three when his father emigrated to America. He studied at Hopewell, NJ and at the College of Philadelphia, graduating at the latter May 15, 1762. The records of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia state that on December 5, 1761, Samuel Jones was "received into the Church by a letter of dismission and recommendation from Tulpehokon". On January 2, 1763, he was ordained pastor of the Lower Dublin Baptist Church (Pennepek) in Philadelphia County, the mother Baptist Church of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The ordination service being had, at the request of the Philadelphia Baptist Church, in the College Hall. For some years after becoming pastor of Lower Dublin, he also had pastoral charge of Southampton Baptist Church, Bucks County, relinquishing the latter in 1770, and continuing as pastor with Lower Dublin until his death. The Philadelphia Baptist Association, showing a trust, somewhat remarkable, in one so young, in the latter part of 1763, sent him to Newport, RI to assist in remodeling the charter of Rhode Island College, now Brown University. In 1769 that college conferred upon him the ad eundum degree of A.M., and in 1786 that of D.D., which latter degree was also, in 1788, conferred upon him by the University of Pennsylvania. He was the author of the following works: "Doctrine of the Covenants", Philadelphia, 1883; "A Treatise on Church Discipline', Philadelphia, 1797; " a Selection of Psalms and Hymns" etc. Burlington, NJ, 1800; "A Century Sermon before Philadelphia Baptist Association", Philadelphia, 1807. He and his wife Sylvia Spicer were married on November 10, 1764. They had five children: Thomas Spicer, Samuel Spicer, Samuel, Sarah, and Sylvia.
