Gideon was raised in a slave-owning plantation society. [8] Though Gideon was born before his father was expelled from the Quaker Society, the Friends did not have much influence on his life. Like his father, future father-in-law, and his brother "Abner, he served in the Revolutionary War. In July 1776, at Spring Garden in Guilford County, North Carolina, he enlisted for one year under Captain John Armstrong, and joined the Second Regiment, commanded by Col. Alexander Martin. After three months at Salisbury, they engaged in battle with the Tories at Hollingsworth Mills on Duncan Creek and took one hundred prisoners who they marched to Charleston, South Carolina. After a year he was given a job of recruiting and scouting. He contacted a swamp fever and after lying ten days in a hard wagon he was left at the Widow Sutton's place on Seven Mile Creek. When he recovered, he went to Salisbury and was discharged in October 1777. When Alexander Martin was elected Governor of North Carolina, Gideon was chosen as one of his life guards under Captin Josiah Gates. This guard duty took the place of any further compulsory military duty. During the winter of 1778, through the hardships of bitter cold, snow and high water, he carried express from Col. James Martin in Guilford across to the western part of the state.
On November 18, 1779, he married fifteen year old Mary Baker DeGraffenreid, born in Lunenburg, Virginia, the daughter of Baker and Sarah (Vass) DeGraffenreid. She born him ten children, all born in Rockingham County, North Carolina. In 1783, he was given power of Attorney by his mother-in-law, Sarah DeGraffenreid to sell four hundred acres of her land in Guilford, North Carolina. Then in 1807, he inherited from his father, his home plantation and all his personal estate. In 1819, after lands were granted for Revolutionary War services, they moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, where his wife, Mary, died at fifty-nine years of age. When Gideon was seventy-eight years old, he applied for a soldier's pension. It was granted as fifty dollars a year. He died November 1, 1843, at Davidson County, Tennessee. Of his nine daughters, three of them married brothers, all sons of John and Mary (Allen ) Chadwell [9] [10]

Armstong's company joined the 2nd Regiment of the Continental Line at Salisbury, NC shortly after Gideon enlisted. He was dischared by then-Col. Alexander Martin, the later governor of NC who appointed Gideon and brother Abner as his body guards. [11]
