Goscombe John was born in Glamorgan, Wales.

William John was born on 21 February 1860 at 3 Union Street, Canton, Glamorgan, Wales. [1] William John is the son of Thomas John, a wood carver, and Elizabeth Smith.

In the 1861 Census, 1 year old son William John was at home in Llandaff, Glamorganshire, Wales with his parents Thomas (a Carpenter, aged 26) and Elizabeth (aged 28). [2]

In the 1871 Census, William John (aged 11) was living at home in Canton, Glamorgan, Wales with his parents Thomas (a Wood Carver) and Elizabeth [3] and his siblings:

The children were all born in Llandaff, Glamorganshire, Wales.

In the 1881 Census, William John aged 21 and employed as a Carver, was living with his parents Thomas (described as a Wood & Stone Carver) and Elizabeth in Wyndham Street, Llandaff, Glamorganshire, Wales [4] and his siblings:

Also in the household was Noah John (aged 55), the unmarried brother of his father who was employed as a Carpenter Foreman.

As a young man he adopted the first name Goscombe, taken from the name of a village in Gloucestershire near his mother's home. [5] Goscombe John was a Welsh Sculptor.

In the September quarter of 1890, William married Anna Martha Weiss who was born in Switzerland about 1864. [6]

In the 1901 Census, William (a Sculptor) and his wife Anna Martha John were at home in St Mark Hamilton Terrace, St John, London and their daughter Muriel Goscombe John (aged 8). [7]

William John was knighted in 1911 and won the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1942.

On the 1911 Census, William Goscombe John (described as a Sculptor Royal Academician) and his wife Anna Martha were at home in 24 Greville Place, Maida Vale, North West London along with their only child Muriel Goscombe John and Clara Weiss, the widowed mother of Anna Martha. [8] [9]

Sir William Goscombe John of 24 Greville Road, St Johns Wood, London died on 15 December 1952 [10] with Probate in London on 6 March to Frederick Luke Val Fildes barrister at law, Muriel Goscombe Fildes, and William Francis Smith [11]solicitor. Effects $35,150 10 shillings and 5 pence.

Sir William Goscombe John was buried at Hampstead Cemetery in Hampstead, London Borough of Camden, Greater London, England. [12]

Goscombe John designed many statues and monuments including the Port Sunlight War Memorial, Llandaff and Llandaff Cathedral School War Memorial and the Equestrian statue of Godfrey Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar in Cathays Park.
