Biography

Bill Jane, son of William R. Jane and Maud E. (Martin) Jane, was born in Chester, Massachusetts, in the spring of 1909; in 1937, he married Maine schoolteacher – later, the successful author of mysteries for young readers – Mary Grace Childs (who wrote under her married surname). He was a skilled ironworker for many years at Maine's renowned shipbuilding plant, the Bath Iron Works.

Both born in Massachusetts, Bill and Mary raised their two sons in Newcastle, Maine, in the neighborhood by the Damariscotta River where Mary's mother, her parents, and a set of grandparents had lived in past years.

Bill passed away in 1989, two years before his wife; both are buried in Newcastle's Pine Knoll Cemetery.
