Biography

1776 Project
Private John Isch served with Cumberland County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Isch is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A060659.

According to the Daughters of the American Revolution, John Ish was born in 1760, in Holland and was living in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania at the time of the American Revolutionary War. John enlisted as a Private in the 2nd Company of the 7th Battalion of the Cumberland county, Militia. John is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A060659. DAR records indicate that John died July 24, 1794, in Knoxville, Tennessee and that his wife was Elizabeth Keppener. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his sons, Alexander K. Ish, who married Elizabeth Prather; John Ish, who married Cynthia Edmiston; and Jacob Ish, who married Pathenia Hinch Gibb. John's DAR records are found under the spelling of the surname as "Ish," with the disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling." [1] Other documents are found under the spelling of this family name as "Isch."

John may have been before 1760, and quite possibly in Holland, but Peter Isch and his wife Philpina had other children christened in Pennsylvania prior to John's. e.g. Christian Isch was christened April 23, 1753, at the First Reformed church of Lancaster. [2] John Isch was christened June 15, 1760, at the First Reformed Church of Lancaster, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, a son of Peter and Philipina Isch. [3] John Isch married Elizabeth Keppener on May 6, 1782 in Perry Co. Pennsylvania and became the parents of eight children: John George, John Jacob, Johnannes, Alexander, William, Mary, Phoebe, and Absolem.

John and his wife, Elizabeth are found in the christening records of their son, John George Ish, who was born March 5, 1783 and christened May 5, 1783, in Saint Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pfouts Valley, Perry county, Pennsylvania. [4] John and Elizabeth are found in the christening records of their son (John) Jacob Ish, christened May 16, 1784, at Saint Michael's. [5] John and Elizabeth are found in the christening records of their son, Johannes Isch, born March 23, 1786 and christened July 9, 1786, at Saint Michael's. [6]

John passed away in 1794 and is buried at Ish Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee. There are photos of the headstone on his Find A Grave memorial, however the inscription is illegible. A note on the memorial says, "Stone reads: Pvt3 Class 7 Militia Rev War." [7]
