Biography

Captain Peter Ingersoll of Great Barrington, was the son of Moses Ingersoll and Catherine (aka Trijntje) Van Slyke who came to the above named town from Springfield in 1726 or 1727. He was born May 11. 1733.

His name appears in 1756 in a list of men in a South Hampshire County Regiment, under command of Colonel Worthington. April 24, 1775 he was engaged as Captain in Colonel David Brewer's Regiment. May 6, 1776 he was commissioned Captain of the 4th (Great Barrington) Company, in Colonel Mark Hopkins' 1st Berkshire County Regiment. From July 1 to July 30, 1776 he was Captain in Colonel John Brown's 3rd Berkshire County Regiment.

"A few days after the departure of Col. Fellows reg. (April 21, 1775) Capt. Peter Ingersoll raised a company in Great Barrington and in the adjoining towns and marching to the vicinity of Boston he joined the Ninth Regt. under Col. David Brewer"
"Capt. Peter was merchant, farmer, and innkeeper, built upon the home lot of his father, the brick house in the south part of the village, lately the home of the Pope family."
