Biography

1776 Project
Captain Jedediah Hyde served with Connecticut Navy during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Jedediah Hyde is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A061655.

Jedediah Hyde was born about 1736-1737 in Norwich, Connecticut. (Note: DAR records that report 24 Aug 1738 as date of birth are in conflict with the gravestone, which reports he was 86 when he died.)

Jedidiah was a 2nd Lt. rank in the French and Indian War campaign of 1762.[1]

Jedediah was also an officer in the American Revolution. He was first Lieutenant in Captain Coit's company and was wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Afterward, he commanded a company in the regular army as Captain.

He was in New York during 1776.[2]

He continued in service with the Continental Line until July of 1777, then resigned his commission and was immediately commissioned a Captain of Marines aboard the Connecticut warship, “General Warren,” running the British blockade of Rhode Island and landing the ship safely at Boston.[3] He then joined the Connecticut Privateer, “General Putnam,”[4] which was armed with 20 cannon and reputed to be the fastest sailer from New England. She captured 14 prizes before being burned to prevent her from falling into the hands of the British during the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition.

Jedediah continued in the naval service until nearly the close of the war. In 1807, he was awarded a pension amounting to $15 per month as a result of a wound to the head received in 1776 at the Battle of Brooklyn (also known as the Battle of Long Island).

During the war, David Parker married Elizabeth Brown and shortly after enlisted in the army under Captain Hyde. Elizabeth petitioned Captain Hyde to release her husband from duty but he refused instead making her a promise. The promise was that if David Parker should be killed in the war and if Mary Hyde should die before his return, Captain Parker would marry her himself. David Parker was killed in battle. Captain Hyde's wife, Mary, died while he was still away in the war.

Jedediah married Elizabeth (Brown) Parker upon his return from the war. They moved to Hydespark in Vermont, which was named for him and from where he was an original proprietor. They had seven children together.

He died on 29 May 1822.[5]

Research Notes

He was reportedly 85 years of age when he died on 28 May 1822, per The Columbian Centinel newspaper.[6]

His grave reports he was 86 years of age and died on 29 May 1822.[7]

Other sources reported he died on 29 Apr 1822[8][9] or at 86 years of age on 28 Apr 1823.[10][11]

Burial

Jedediah Hyde Cemetery, Hyde Park, Lamoille, Vermont (Note: Formerly Orleans County)

Research Notes

There was a false report made that Capt. Jed Hyde was murdered in 1791: Vermont Gazette (Bennington), 7/18/1791: Yet another story on the death: reports that a man from Fair Haven told a paper in Litchfield, CT that Capt. Jedediah Hyde had been murdered by Wells, because he had been haranguing Wells about a debt, which Wells refused to pay. Claimed Wells had threatened JH's life, in the event JH tried to collect; that people on shore heard cry of murder from the canoe; that head of JH found beaten in; etc. Ed.--report false. Repeats jury of inquest verdict. Hopes the man from Fair Haven will come forward & recant his story.

Chapter V: The Ship General Putnam, New London Privateer (pp. 54-63), details the career of this ship, which was reputed to be the fastest sailer from New England. She was armed with 20 cannon and captured 14 prizes before being burned to prevent her from falling into the hands of the British during the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition. The chapter includes transcriptions of a number of interesting documents regarding the construction and fitting out of the ship, the instructions from Congress authorizing the taking of British ships and setting the terms and conditions to be observed by the privateers, and the crew list from the ship's first voyage under the command of Capt. Thomas Allon (pp. 59-61). The name of "Jedediah Hyde Capt of marines" appears on p. 59, among the ship's officers for that first voyage.
