Joseph is estimated to have been born about 1770. He was the son of John Holdershaw and Sarah Cole. He was married to Rachel Cole in 1790. Like others of his family he began using the name Joseph H. Shaw after the death of his father. He was apparently deeded land by his father prior to 1798 when he executed a deed to his brother William next to their father. He and his brothers John Holdershaw, Jr. & William Holdershaw were enumerated as neighbors during the census of 1800, listed as Aldershaw. He received a distribution from his father's estate in 1808.
Joseph appears to have suffered some type of calamity which caused him to be indebted to several men. These men filed suits and won judgements against him. In 1808 Joseph sold the 75 acres upon which he resided jointly to his brother-in-law Ralph Ellingwood and Asa Bean, who had been his father's administrator. This appears to have been for protection as if he knew there would be executions against him for his debts. He was still living in Frankfort in 1810 when three separate judgements were executed against him wherein lots of land he owned were seized to cover his debts. It does not appear the land where he resided was lost during these executions because he was last enumerated in Frankfort during the 1820 census with several of his same neighbors.
On November 25, 1790, in Orrington, Maine, Joseph Holdershaw married Rachel Cole.[1]
