Biography

Asahel Harriman was a pioneer settler of Bucksport.

".... Asahel Harriman, son of John and Sarah (Morrill), was baptized in Haverhill, Mass., July 18, 1731. He married Susanna Bartlett, who was probably born in Haverhill, Mass., Jan. 26, 1734, probably daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (Johnson) Bartlett. In 1763, Asahel Harriman moved from Plaistow, N. H., to Bucksport

"... Asahel Harriman served on the Crown Point expedition, enlisting in Samuel Watts' company, Col. Nathaniel Meserve's regiment, in May, 1756, and being discharged in December, 1756. He also served in the expedition of 1757, being a private in Capt. Jacob Bailey's (2d) company, from March 5 to Nov. 5, 1757. ..."

In 1760 a regiment was raised in New Hampshire under command of Colonel John Gone of Bedford, for service in that campaign, under General Jeffrey Amherst. Jacob Bailey, a well-known Newbury Pioneer, was Lieutenant Colonel, and one of the companies was officered by John Hazen as captain. ".... Asahel Harriman was the first lieutenant in this company. He served in the Revolutionary War, being commissioned first lieutenant of Capt. Samuel Keyes' (2d) company, Col. Jonathan Buck's (5th) Lincoln county regiment of Massachusetts militia, July 23, 1776; also, enlisting as a private in Capt. Ebenezer Buck's company of volunteers, Col. Josiah Brewer's regiment, Gen. Lovell's brigade, Sept. 3, 1779, and being discharged Oct. 22, 1779; this company served on a Penobscot expedition. ..."

Bucksport, Maine ....
In 1766-67, Asahel Harriman, Jonathan Frye, Benjamin Page, Phineas Arnes, Jonathan Bück, Jr., and Ebenezer Bück, came here and settled on lots agreeably to the provisions of the grant, which gave to each actual settler one hundred acres of land. According to the records there were but twenty-one families here in 1775.
