Biography

This profile is part of the Hanlon Name Study.

Early Life

Patrick Hanlon was born around 1840[1] (sources vary, from 1737[1] to 1744[2][3][4]). This may have been in Ireland,[1] or Pennsylvania. (See Research Notes, below).

Patrick was a farmer by occupation.[5]

Military Life

1776 Project
Private Patrick Hanlon served with 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

He was a patriot soldier in the Revolutionary War: he served as a private[2][3][4][6][7] on the Pennsylvania Continental Line.[2][4][7] He enlisted about 1777[5][8] with the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment,[2][3][5] in "Sigler's" (Ziegler's) Company[5] under the command of Colonel Butler.[5] He may also have spent some time in the 4th Pennsylvania Regiment. [9]

He saw action with the unit and was wounded twice: he received a shot to the hip at the Battle of Brandywine[5] and a wound to the wrist at Paoli.[5]

SAR insignia
Patrick Hanlon is an NSSAR Patriot Ancestor.
NSSAR Ancestor #: 174552
Rank: Private

Patrick is recognised for his service by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), patriot no. P-174552.[10][11][12][13][14]

He received an honourable discharge[5][8] on completion of his term of five or six years.[5][8][15]

Patrick "Hanlin" applied for his Revolutionary War bounty land (per the act of 09 Jul 1788) and was issued land warrant no. 9585 for the standard 100 acres due to a private.[16]

Civilian Life

Pennsylvania
Patrick was married to Margaret during the war, about 1778[8] (see Family, below) and

"when he came to be married he brought his knapsack & musket with him & wore his soldier's uniform - the wedding took place at the house of Colonel James Chambers on Canagojigg creek, in the state of Pennsylvania..."

Today this would be Conococheague Creek in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Harrison County, Virginia
Shortly after the the war (which ended 03 Sep 1783), Patrick and Margaret moved the family to Harrison County, Virginia[8] where they had a 200 acre farm[17] in the North of the county, on the waters of Lost Run and Booth's Creek.[17] A friend, Temperance Cochran, recalled:[18]

Their acquaintance commenced in Harrison County in this state, just before, or about the time the last Indian deprevations were committed in that country.

Temperance was also a friend of Patrick's brother James,[18] saying she was well acquainted with

James Hanlin (late a United States Pensioner) & his wife - the said James Hanlin was the brother of the said Patrick Hanlin...

The 1801 tax list of Harrison County has Patrick "Hanlin" living there, paying tax on one horse.[19] His brother James Hanlin also lived in Harrison County and paid tax on two horses.[20] The children must have grown up there: it was two decades later when Patrick and Margaret signed the deed on 15 Aug 1808 to sell their land in Harrison County.[17]

They probably left Harrison County in 1809 or 1810, as Patrick recalled in a letter he wrote on 15 Dec 1821:[21]

"about 10 or 11 years ago he removed from the county of Harrison to the land on which he now lives..."

Ohio County, Virginia
The 1810 census records "Patric Handon" in Elizabeth township, Ohio County, Virginia.[22] His household consisted of a male and a female each aged 45 or over (Patrick and Margaret), two males aged 16 to 25 (Felix and John) and a boy and a girl each aged under 10 (James and Mary).[22]

Tyler County, Virginia
Patrick and family were pioneers of Tyler County, Virginia as they were already living there when it was formed on December 6, 1814 from part of Ohio County. (This would later become Tyler County, West Virginia when it achieved statehood on 20 Jun 1863, after Patrick's lifetime.)

Patrick "Hanlin" received a Revolutionary War pension commencing 12 Aug 1818[4][6][15] in Tyler County,[15] Virginia.[6] The Secretary of War's 1820 report confirms Patrick "Hanlin" collected his Revolutionary War pension in Virginia[7] (and the 1835 pension roll repeats this[4]).

The 1820 census of Tyler County, Virginia has Patrick Hanlin as a head of household, age over 45 (he would be about 76 if born in 1744) with one female aged over 45 (Margaret would be about 67 as he said she was 65 in 1818[5]), and two younger men presumed to be sons Felix and James: one aged 26 to 45 and one 16 to 26.[23]). Two people were engaged in agriculture,[23] presumably the two younger men.

Death & Burial

Patrick died 28 Feb1826[1][2][3][4][6] at the age of 82[2][3] in either Tyler County,[2][3] Virginia or Washington County,[1] Ohio. He was buried at Tice Cemetery in Ludlow township, Washington County. A brass plate commemorating his Revolutionary War service was recently added.[1]

Family

Patrick was married to Margaret in 1778 or 1779 in Chambersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania.[8]

They had at least five children (some accounts say eight children[citation needed]) including:

  1. Nelly,[8][18] eldest child,[8][18] born ~1879,[8] died 1832 aged 53[8]
  2. Felix[24][25]
  3. John,[24] lived in Texas[24]
  4. James[24][26][10] b. 1796 Harrison Co. VA,[10] d. bef. 27 Nov 1855 Adair Co. MO[10]
  5. Mary,[24][27][11] b. Mar 1800,[27] [11]d. 01 Sep 1868 Tyler Co. WV[27][11]

Possibly also:

Note: the three SAR applications are the ONLY records found to date that name Richard as a son of Patrick and Margaret. Richard may actually have been their nephew, the son of Patrick's brother James and wife Elizabeth.

Research Notes

  • Date of birth: the roster in the Pennsylvania Archives Second Series, vol. 10[2] and Fifth Series, vol. 2[3] as well as the 1835 pension roll[4] suggest Patrick was born in 1744. This profile currently uses the 1737 date given on the grave marker[1] (this is not original, so source for this date is needed).
  • Place of birth: the SAR applications consistently give Patrick's birthplace as Ireland - however they also consistently give a birth date which does not match other records, so this may not be from an accurate source. Patrick's brother James, also recognised as a SAR patriot, has Pennsylvania listed as his birthplace.
  • Place of death: two conflicting places reported:
    1. Tyler County, Virginia (Pennsylvania Archives 2nd series vol. 10[2] & 5th series, vol. 2[3])
    2. Washington County, Ohio (findagrave.com[1])
  • SAR: There appears to be a second SAR profile for Patrick with a different birth date - and place - but the same death date of 28 Feb 1826.
    1. Patrick Hanlin (1744 - 28 Feb 1826): approved SAR application with patriot no. unknown, by John Mossor, descended of Patrick's daughter Mary.
    2. Patrick Hanlin (1737 - 28 Feb 1826): approved SAR applications for patriot no. P-174552, submitted by Welcome Earl Hill,[12] Thomas Eugene O'Hanlon,[13] and Paul Michael O'Hanlon,[14] all descended of Patrick's son Richard; also Orville Edward Bowers, descended of Patrick's son James.[10]
  • Pennsylvania: Patrick's residence location in Pennsylvania prior to moving to Tyler County, Virginia is unknown. The 1810 census has a "Redman Hanlin" in Washington township, Fayette County that might be related.[28]
