Stephen was born in Pennsylvania[1] about 1751.[1][2] He lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania[1] and was married to Elizabeth Brown.[1]

He was a patriot soldier[1][2] in the Revolutionary War: he served as a private[1][3] under Col. McCoy[1] for the Pennsylvania line.[1][2][3]
