The 1881 census was taken on April 3rd. On census night, John was lodging with Thomas Morley and Elizabeth (Eden) Morley, who were probably not relatives. John was said to be 21, and working as a glass polisher.
John married Alice Garner on May 15th 1881 at Christ Church, Eccleston (Anglican). John was said to be a labourer. The witnesses were James Rigby and Sarah Garner, Alice's sister and Alice's sister's future husband. Alice was 18 and signed her own name; John was 22 and made his mark. Both bride and groom were previously unmarried, and said to be resident in Eccleston. John's father was deceased, and wasn't named in the record.

By 1901, John was still working as a labourer at the sheet glass works. Two of John & Alice's daughters, Agnes and Sarah, were in the Fever Hospital on census night, leaving three sons at home. The two teenaged sons were working as a bottle maker apprentice and a grocer's assistant, and the youngest was six.
John & Alice's son Thomas married and set up his own household in 1907.
By 1911, John had a new job as a fitter's labourer; and Alice was working as a grocer, with Agnes helping her run the shop. The eldest son William was still single and living at home, and working as a drawer in the colliery. The youngest son, John, was working at Pilkington's (the sheet glass works), and the youngest daughter Sarah, now 12, had survived the 1901 fever and was back home.
John died in 1929 at the age of 69 and was buried on January 31st in St Helens Cemetery. Alice died later in the year at the age of 66, and was buried July 22nd in the same grave.
