Biography
Thomas Greenough was born May 6, 1710, in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of John Greenough and Elizabeth (Gross) Greenough (1674-1746) [1] Thomas was a prominent mechanical instrument maker (marine compasses, backstaffs and wooden surveying compasses) in Boston.
Thomas was a member of Committee of Safety during Revolution and was Captain of the Fourth Company of the Second Massachusetts Regiment, in the Cape Breton Expedition. (for details see S. A. Bedini biography in Professional Surveyor Magazine, v. 19, no. 7) Thomas is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.[2] Application for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his daughters, Mary Greenough, who married John Savage; and Elizabeth Greenough, who married Elzeazer Brooks; and of his son, William Greenough, who married Lydia Haskins.
