Alexander was born on 4 Apr 1826 in Cromdale, Inverness-shire, Scotland, the son of George Grant (abt.1784-1868) and Jane (McGrigor) Grant (abt.1786-bef.1851).^[1]

He married Margaret McDonald on 14 Sep 1861 in Mains of Glenlochy, Abernethy and Kincardine, Inverness-shire. The marriage record says that both Alexander and Margaret were living in Croftmore, Kincardine at the time of their marriage. ^[2][3]

He died on 15 Mar 1901 in Easter Curr, Duthil, Inverness-shire. The informant on his death certificate was his son George.^[4]
