Biography:

"Alpin Grant was born on 15 March 1740 in Meikle, Inverness, Scotland. He was christened on 16 Mar 1740. He appeared on the census in 1817 in Pictou, NS. He died in 1828 in East River, Pictou, NS. East River was called Duckland by the Indians.

Alpin Grant was born in Glen Urquhart, Scotland, in 1740. He was the son of John Iain Roy Grant and Margaret McKerres. In 1775 he followed his brother James to the American Colonies. It is unsure whether his original destination was N.S. It is thought that the destination might have been New York and they were diverted north to Boston, made to enlist in the army, 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, 2nd Battalion under Major Small. Due to the surrender of Boston, the regiment was taken to Halifax. When they landed in Nova Scotia, Alpin left his son Peter to be schooled in Halifax and was forced to stay in the 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, 2nd Battalion under Major Small. He served out the war in the Windsor area. It is assumed that his wife and son James accompanied him; two more sons were born before his discharge in 1783. At that time, Alpin and Margaret appear to have moved on to East River in Pictou County. Pictou County in 1775 was a wilderness waiting to be tamed into farms. Alpin with his background as a farmer on Drum Fadda Long Ridge in his homeland of Inverness Co. Scotland was ready for the challenge. Alpin lived until 1828. He presumably died in East River, but at this time his grave has not been located in Pictou.
