Biography

George was baptised 21 Feb 1830 at St. Mary the Virgin, Elham, Kent[1]. Parents Henry and Esther.

The 1851 census shows George as a 21 year old servant in Cheriton Parish. It notes that he was born in Elham, Kent County.

He married Anne Elizabeth Taylor, who was born in England 26 Feb 1836. (poss. Jun 1854, District of Elham, County of Kent 2a 1030. Folkstone is in the District of Elham). She died 20 May 1921 and is buried in King.

In 1861, George Gilham, labourer, 32, b. England, Ann, 37, b. England, Mary, 9, b. England, David, 5, b. Canada W. and Sarah, 2, b. Canada W. were residing in King Township, York Co., Ontario. They owned 1 cow and 2 pigs giving them livestock valued at $26.

In 1871, George Gellhan, farmer, 41, b. England, Ann, 37, b. England, Mary Ann, 16, b. England, Henry, 14, Sarah, 12, Emma J., 10, George Taylor, 8, Albert, 6, James, 2 and Louis R., 9 months were residing in King Township, York Co., Ontario.

In 1881, George Gillham, farmer, 51, b. England, Ann, 47, b. England, Emma, 20, George T., 19, Wm. Albert, 16, James, 12, Lewis R., 10, Esther S., 6 were residing in King Township, York Co., Ontario.

In 1891, George Gillam, farmer, 61, b. England, Ann, 56, b. England, George, 28, Lewis, 20, Sophia, 16 and Emma, 25 were residing in King Township, York Co., Ontario.

In 1901, George Gillham, farmer, 71, b. England, Ann, 65, b. England, Lewis R., farmer, 30, Sophia E., 26 and John Gould, farm labourer, 17, were residing in King Township, York Co., Ontario. The 1901 census records show that George and Anne immigrated to Canada in 1855.

They were both living in King Township, Ontario in 1901. John Gould, b. 28 Oct 1883, farm labourer, was boarding with them.

George died 2 Jun 1921, at the age of 91, and is buried in the King City Cemetery. His death certificate indicates he had lived in King for 55 years, making his immigration in 1865.

  9. Esther Sophia, b. 5 Sep 1874, m. Henry Johnson, d. Feb 1969 in Stouffville, Ont.
  10. Sarah Jane, b. 16 Jan 1876, m. ___ Ash, d. 8 Mar 1957, bur. King, Ont.

Gillham-374 and Gilham-542 appear to represent the same person because: Using surname spelling on baptism record and 1841 census. George's father was not Thomas, it was Henry (with his wife Esther) as shown on baptism record. Two families and been confused, one in Elham/Acrise, the other in Waltham.
