Biography

Joseph Getchell was born on June 26, 1726, in Wells, Maine, his father, Joseph, was 34 and his mother, Eunice, was 23. He married Mary Mitchell Brown on July 17, 1750, in Scarborough, Maine. They had four children during their marriage. He died in 1822 in Machias, Maine, at the impressive age of 96.

Joseph Getchell Jr. married Mary (Berry) Mitchell, widow of Israel Mitchell, in Scarborough, Maine on July 17, 1750. In 1765 they removed to Machias, Maine.

He built the first saw mill erected in eastern Maine.

He died at Machias in 1822 at the age of 96.

Children: Benjamin born in Scarborough February 4, 1753; married Mehitable Meserve. At the age of 26 he removed to St. Stephen, New Brunswick and was one of the first settlers there. Mary born June 9, 1754. Joseph born May 8, 1757; married Sally Berry of Machias, Maine.

  • 1777: Private of Artillery in Capt. John Preble's Co., 1777.
  • Was a pensioner.
  • 1779: Corporal in the Penobscot expedition for the reduction of Canada.
