Alan Garnett aka Rae was born in 1913 in West Wyalong, New South Wales, Australia, son of Hilton Sydney Rae (1887–1970) and Ivy Garnett (1890–1968).
| I, ALAN RAE, heretofore called and known by the name of Alan Garnett, of West Wyalong, in the State of New South Wales, hereby give public notice that on the nine teenth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-eight, I formally and absolutely renounced, relinquished and abandoned the use of my said surname of Garnett, and then assumed, adopted and determined thenceforth on all occasions whatsoever to use and subscribe the surname of Rae instead of the said surname of Garnett; and I give further notice that by a deed poll dated the said nineteenth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-eight, duly executed and attested and enrolled in the office of the Registrar General of New South Wales at Sydney, in the said State, I formally and absolutely renounced and abandoned the said surname of Garnett and declared that I had assumed and adopted and intended thenceforth upon all occasions whatsoever to use and subscribe the surname of Rae instead of the surname of Garnett, and so as to be at all times thereafter called, known and described by the surname of Rae exclusive. Alan (26) married Annie Frances Piffero (22) (born on July 15, 1917 in Culcairn, New South Wales; daughter of William Piffero and Lily May Sanders) in 1940 in Sutherland, New South Wales.[2]
Alan died on February 16, 1975 in Bondi, New South Wales, Australia, aged 61.[3]
