Biography

1776 Project
Captain James Garland Jr. served with Albemarle County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
James Garland Jr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A043988.

James Garland, Jr. was born in 1753, in Hanover county, Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War, James served as an officer in Albemarle county, Virginia. [1]

Captain James Garland lost his life in 1781. On August 2, 1832, Jesse Beck of Albemarle County took and oath that he served three tours at Albemarle Barracks under Captain James Garland, who was killed by a sentinel at the barracks. William Turner makes the same declaration on 21 December 1832. James Garland, (1753-81), commanded the company detailed to guard the surrendered troops of Burgoyne. When officer of the day at the barracks, James Garland was shot by the sentry at night as he did not give the password. [2]

Captain James Garland is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolutionary War, as DAR Ancestor #A043988. DAR records indicate that his wife's name was Anne Wingfield. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their sons, David S. Garland, who married Jane Henry Meredith; Husdon Martin Garland, who married Elizabeth Philips; and James Parker Garland, who married Keturah "Kitty" Stone.[3]

"James Garland, Jr., an officer of the guards, was killed by Lawrence Mansfield while on duty as a sentinel. According to all the traditions connected with the case, it was a justifiable homicide. It was owing to a refusal to halt and give the countersign. The motive of Garland is differently explained. One account represents him as designing to test the competence and fidelity of the guard. Another version has it, that he was indulging a spirit of frolic... The will of the unfortunate man is on record, and from the serious spirit with which it is pervaded, one would judge that the first account more probably indicates the reason of his conduct." [4]
