Richard Fancher was born in New Jersey (possibly Long Island, NY). He was married in Pottsylvania County, VA to Sarah Journegan. This was after serving seven years as a soldier in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and beyond. He was a member of the Eighth Regiment of Virginia and fought in the Battle of Fort Moultric in Charleston Harbor.
Family legend has it he retrieved the fallen flag and held it in place in view of Charleston saving the city from burning which was the plan should they see the flag fall. After the revolution he would also participate in fighting the Indians in North Carolina.
