Biography

This profile is part of the Duke Name Study.

John M. Duke was born about 1793, possibly in Georgia. The majority of his life was spent in Conecuh County, Alabama, where he appears in records from 1818,[1] 1820,[2] 1840,[3] and 1850.[4] He was married to Elizabeth, and they were both still living in Leake County, Mississippi in 1860.[5] It is assumed that they died shortly thereafter.

DNA

  • Paternal relationship is suggested through Y-chromosome DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. J.R. Duke, FTDNA kit # B750248, and potentially his 4th cousin, B.E. Duke, FTDNA kit # 132546, match at a Genetic Distance of 0 on 111 markers, thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor, possibly Joel Duke, who could be the father of both John M. Duke, the 3x great grandfather of J.R. Duke, and Adam Duke, the 3x great grandfather of B.E. Duke. Their haplogroup is I-BY62571.
  • While the current Y-DNA connection is not enough to confirm the connection to Joel Duke, it has been speculated that Adam Duke may have been his brother, and yDNA evidence indicates that to be a possibility, although the closeness of the relationship is still unproven. Descendants of both men are known to descend from John Duke from Isle of Wight, Virginia. Their haplogroup is I-BY62571.[6]

Research Notes

  • Some sources indicate that John's father was Joel,[7] but the Smyth book lists him as John. No records have provided definite proof at this time. It is also theorized (but unproven) that John M. and Adam may be the brothers of Joel Emerson Duke,[8] and there are distant autosomal matches that suggest a connection, but none of his male descendants are known to have done a yDNA test at this time.
Can you help solve the mystery of their ancestors?
  • Land records also seem to suggest that there could have been a relationship between Adam Duke, Joel Duke, and John Duke.
