Commander Devos enlisted in the U.S. Navy June 5, 1930, and was released June 30, 1960. He served in both WWII and the Korean War.
As Commander of the USS Murray (DD-576), 1st Carrier Task Force, Pacific during WWII, Captain Devos received the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer USS MURRAY near the coast of Japan and later in the vicinity of Okinawa Shima, March 17-27,1945. Commanding an important unit of an advanced picket group, Captain Devos engaged in offensive operations against enemy aerial forces and assisted in the destruction of seven enemy planes. Later, as a unit of Carrier Task Group FIFTY-EIGHT POINT ONE, he directed the MURRAY during several missions and shot down an attacking torpedo plane in spite of the fact two of his guns were out of commission. Through his courage and initiative, he contributed greatly to the missions of the Murray, and his devotion to duty was in the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
