Samuel Dedman was born about 1750. He is the son of Philip Dedman.[1] Samuel served on the Committee of Safety, in Mecklenburg county, Virginia, and became an officer in the Militia, during the American Revolutionary War. He was first a Major, and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. [2] LTC Dedman was honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Application for membership in the Society have been filed by the descendants of his sons, James Francis Dedman, who married Temperance Crafton; Phillip Dedman, who married Mary Hawkins; John Dedman, who married Elizabeth White; and Thomas Dedman, who married Elizabeth Millirons; and of his daughter, Elinor "Nellie" Dedman, who married Larkin White. [3][4]

Samuel Dedman married Eleanor (Elanir) Howard.[1] They were the parents of eight children, all born in Virginia:[1]

  3. Elinor (Nellie), born 26 March 1775 in Charles Parish, York, Virginia, married first Larkin White

  5. Philip, born 1779 in Mecklenburg, Virginia
  6. Thomas, born 20 March 1784 in Mecklenburg, Virginia
  7. William, born 1786 in Mecklenburg, Virginia
  8. James Francis, born 23 February 1788 in Mecklenburg, Virginia

He died in 1789.[5]

Research Notes

There are multiple Samuel Dedmans born in the early 1700's in Virginia.

This Samuel Dedman is from York County, Virginia. His family moved to Mecklenburg, Virginia and Madison County, Alabama. That Samuel is the one that is documented as a child of Philip and great grandchild of Christopher Dedman. His parents and descendants are documented extensively in the privately published DEDMAN - DEADMON Family History by Anna Laura Griffith. Samuel is listed in his father's and mother's wills.[1]

The other Samuel Dedman was born in 1720 in Louisa, Virginia and his son Samuel was born around 1748. The family is in Albemarle in 1789. Their descendants are found in Fayette, Kentucky and Pike County, Kentucky.
