Groom: Pieter Jacobus de Vos, Senior, ... Wifower, Gentleman, HexRiver, Parish of Worcester[6]
Bride: Johanna Elizabeth Meyring ... Spinster, Paarl Village[6]
Farmer
Peter Jacobus started farming with his parents at Buffelskraal. His father died in 1804, and his mother in1820. Pieter Jacobus moved to the neighbouring farm "de Doorns", which he had surveyed in 1818 when he was Feldcornet. In 1823, the farm (or a large part) was transferred to heim, and again surveyed.
In 1832 he also acquired Karbonaatjeskraal, but he seems to have sold it again in 1838.
De Doorns was enormous, and over time it was subdivided into many smaller farms, as well as the land for the town of de Doorns.
He was succeeded by his son Wouter.
Slave Owner
Pieter Jacobus de Vos registered 66 slaves(!) at the Tulbagh (later Worcester) Slave Register, in Ledger V, Folios V10[7], V56[8], V81[9], and V99[10]. The number of registered slaves was 66! What does this tell us about Pieter Jacobus de Vos?

This Folio Tulbagh V10 was filled nearly immediately, and we may note that initially nobody cared about noting down details important for the actual human beings 'behind' the slave. Striking that nearly all are 'van de Kaap', very few older men from Java, Mosambique, Malabar.
In 1816, Cupido was only four months old, but his mother is not noted down, and the form has no space for the father. However, in 1818, we see that Rosina listed as daughter of Amelie. This seems a direct effect of setting up the Slave Registers.
A curiosity is the occurrance of duplicate names, easy if there is no surname, for which a number is added. This suggests that the slave 'arrived' with an existing name, and it was not changed but preserved, though in practice there would have been a way to deal with it. The second Folio contains many of these people with a 'counter'.

Note the case of Lea, in which the 'counters' added to names were modified or 'reset' when earlier persons with the same name died, or were sold to elsewhere. This is somewhat confusing, but these counters are copied here, without yet working out the information in the 'remarks' collumn.
By now, the children are starting to become a significant fraction of the slaves. It is clear that the Register did not allow them to have a working role. But they may have been put to work. Was schooling available for them? Government did encourage some level of schooling, but what was it?

In this ledger, we seem to see a move in which Pieter Jacobus must have encouraged his slave women to get children, and they seem to have seen their side of the deal in times where abolition was not yet finally decided, but was hanging in the air. A few slaves are still bought from outside, for special skills. A Tailor seems needed, with this large number of children.
At the end of Folio 81, it says 'continued on Folio 99'. It is found in a last small 'volume' of Ledger V. These are the final 6 slaves, mostly born in the household, but also two old slaves, bought in the last years 1833/34 before abolition (affording them some kind of 'retirement'?):
1833-10-07, Jan son of Clara(1), born 1833-05-02
1834-04-30, Amsterdam son of Cathryn(2), born 1833-11-09
1834-04-30, Carolina doughter of Rachel, born 1834-01-08
1834-11-24, Andries son of Calonie, born 1834-10-18
1834-11-28, Damon van Mosambique, male, ~72y old, est birth 1762-11-28, Labourer
1834-11-28, Eva van de Kaap, female, ~53y old, est birth 1781-11-28, Housemaid
However, there is a Folio 92[11], for a collection of de Vos family members, including Pieter Jacobus. Was this slave from an inheritence? Was this some kind of collective 'retirement' for this 65 year old slave? His skill as a Taylor would certainly have been useful to them all.
Collective owners: Pieter Jacobus, Philippus, Dirk, Jacob, Wouter, Margaretha Jacoba, married to Daniel Retief
1831-08-19, Bientang van Java, male, ~65 years old, est. birth 1766-08-19, Taylor
Slave Baptism
On 20 Sept 1826, the slave Anna, born on 25 June, was baptised as Antje, by the |missionary Arie Vos from Tulbagh, at Hexrivier[12]. Maybe surprising, viewing from our times: Antje's mother was not listed, but she was listed as Anna(1) in the slave register. Also, she did not receive a surname, but the slave owner and the baptising missionary had to be listed. Clearly, this transition of labour was on its way, but without the necessary changes in culture, values, and practices.
