Biography

Origins

It has been imagined that Martha was a daughter of Elijah Davis and Mary Barker, born ca 1604 at Lydd, Kent, England, christened July 1, 1604 in Harbledown, Kent, England.[citation needed]

Disputed Relations

Some have imagined the wife of William Mead was Mary Barker, Martha Davis, or Martha Barker Davis. There is no documentation or evidence for this, and no sources are provided. This profile has been retained on WikiTree to inform and to prevent the creation of duplicates.

Corrected Information

The wife of William Mead was Philip or Philipa or Philippe ____. who he married in the parish of Saint Mary's, Watford, Hertfordshire, England.[1]

Remington shows us that "Philip" was actually recorded in Stamford town records upon her death (recorded at Stamford, Sept. 19, 1657).[1] The Barbour Collection uses "Philip," and their information was taken from the Vital Records of Stamford, Births, Marriages, and Deaths.[2] Donald Lines Jacobus transcribed the Stamford Town Records, and he found her maiden name to be "Kilvey," although he followed this with a question mark and brackets, "indicating that he had trouble reading the original."[1] William's wife's profile is this one for Philip Kilvey.

S. P. Mead called the wife of William Mead unidentified in his 1901 book, History and Genealogy of the Mead Family of Fairfield County, Connecticut ...[3] Mead saw the record of her death in the Stamford Town Records. Maybe he left her name out of his account, because he did not understand that Philip was both a male and female name in the seventeenth century.[1]

I approved the merge and removed William Mead as her spouse.

Davis-24641 and Davis-949 appear to represent the same person because: see write up on husband on Davis-949, these profiles should be merged and husband not included.

Dorothy Stuart Hall has written a very good summary of the latest research on this family's English origins. https://familysearch.org/photos/stories/5507389 Given this, I believe it may be time to revise WikiTree to match. This profile probably should be detatched from William Mead and Philip Kilvey made his wife. What do you think?
