Porter Alvie Davis was born in Mississippi. His parents were Jefferson Byrd Davis (22 Feb 1822-21 Mar 1900) and Martha Washington Hollis (1829 - 1914). Porter was a teamster (a teamster was a man that drove a team of horses or mules to transport freight or stagecoach passengers.) He married first to Mary L. Smith in 1874; they resided in Arkansas. The couple had three children during the five years they were married:
Mary died in 1879 and Porter married Mary E. Sutton in 1881[1] in Arkansas. Porter and Mary E. Davis had six children, five are known:
