Timothy Danielson served in the American Revolution along with his father, two uncles, and five brothers. Served 2 months (10 May 1777- 8 July 1777) as a private in Captain Nehemia May's Company, Col. David Leonard's Regiment, at Ticonderoga. He fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill where his firearm was hit by a British bullet and part of his gun was shot away. Timothy started as a Private and was promoted to Sergeant during the Revolution. Timothy received a pension in 1833 for his service as Private and Sergeant in the Massachusetts Militia.
In 1792 Timothy moved with his family from Hampden County, Massachusetts, to Butternuts (now Gilbertsville), Otsego County, New York. He was a farmer and blacksmith and acquired Lot 16 known as the Morris Patent. He deeded a 25 acres lot (no. 35, Morris patent), to David Walker in 1801. Timothy was very religious and took the lead in his new town in organizing the first Presbyterian church in Butternuts. In 1797 the church was built on Timothy's property. Timothy was appointed church scribe. Timothy and his sons, Asa and Eli, were in the church choir and were said to have had fine voices. Timothy Danielson served as a clerk for the church. Records for 6 October 1817 show: "Timothy Danielson excommunicated for exacting too much toll and taking grain, flour, and bran at his mill". Records show he was back in the church by 1823. In Timothy's era the men of the Donaldson/Danielson family were renowned for their longevity. Timothy lived to age 91 and his father, John Danielson, to age 87. Timothy's brothers, Calvin and Nathaniel, lived to 90 and 86 respectively. Timothy's two sons, Asa and Eli, both later lived into their eighties. In 1834 along with his sons and most of his brothers he changed his surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing 'Donaldson' to be the original family name back in 1600's Scotland. Much of the best research on the Donaldson/Danielson family was done from 1925-1965 by Harriet H. Donaldson Wilkinson.
