Peter Coombs was born say 1722; died circa 1791; his marriage (1st) intentions were published at Falmouth (Portland), ME, on 11 Apr 1743 to Thankful STROUT of Falmouth.[1]
Thankful Strout was born 21 Jun 1725 at Truro, MA, the daughter of Joseph Strout and Rachel Doane of Falmouth.[2] Apparently, Thankful (Strout) Coombs died prior to 1769.
Peter Coombs of Brunswick published his marriage (2nd) intentions at Brunswick, ME, on 22 Apr 1769 to Mrs. Bathsheba (Atwood) BERRY of Falmouth,[3] and they were married 8 May 1769.[4]
Bathsheba Atwood was born 1 Aug 1723 at Truro, MA, daughter of Joseph Atwood and Lydia Doane.[5] Bathsheba was the widow of Thomas Berry,[6] an early settler at New Meadows [ME] who held land adjacent to the Coombs properties.[7]
In early deeds Peter of Brunswick was referred to as “Peter Coombs, Jr.” and after the Revolutionary War he was “Capt. Peter Coombs” in acknowledgement of his military rank.
Military Service –
French & Indian Wars – Peter was a Private in expedition to the Eastward, served for 5 weeks and 5 days (9 May 1755 to 17 Jun 1755) in Capt. David Dunning’s co.;[8] also, from Ezekial Thompson’s Day Book: “Captain Peter Coombs, son of Lt. Peter Coombs, served in 1757 in Capt. David Dunning’s Alarm List at Brunswick, Me. He was probably a Captain in John Getchell’s Company in 1778.”
Revolutionary War – Peter was a Captain, 6th (Brunswick) co., Col. Jonathan Mitchell’s (2nd) Cumberland Co. regt.; list of officers of Mass. militia dated North Yarmouth, 4 Apr 1776; ordered in Council 5 Jun 1776, that a commission be issued; reported commissioned 5 Jun 1776; also, Captain, 2nd Brunswick co., 2d Cumberland Co. regt.; return of officers dated Brunswick, 29 Aug 1776.[9]
