Name: Audrey D Collins
Event Type: Birth Registration

Audrey's parents were living at Grub Ground Cottage, Jail Lane at the time of the 1921 census.

Geographical Note and Social context: Jail Lane runs east to west from the Shingle Street junction to Biggin Hill. It may have taken its name from the Old Jail Inn, a hostelry built in the 18th C as a terrace of two or three cottages with attached outbuildings. There is speculation that it earned its name by accommodating convicts and their guards travelling between Maidstone and London.
Grub Ground is a farm to the south of Jail Lane , between the Old Brickfield and Biggin Hill

Name Meaning Collins 1 Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Coileáin and Mac Coileáin ( see Cullen 1).2 English: patronymic from the Middle English personal name Col(l)in, a pet form of Coll , itself a short form of Nicholas

Audrey Much altered form of the Old English girl's name Æðelþryð, derived from æðel ‘noble’ + þryð ‘strength’. This was the name of a 6th-century saint (normally known by the Latinized form of her name, Etheldreda), who was a particular favourite in the Middle Ages. According to tradition she died from a tumour of the neck, which she bore stoically as a divine punishment for her youthful delight in fine necklaces. The name went into a decline at the end of the Middle Ages, when it came to be considered vulgar, being associated with tawdry, that is, lace and other goods sold at fairs held in her name (the word deriving from a misdivision of Saint Audrey). Shakespeare bestowed it on Touchstone's comic sweetheart in As You Like It. In the 20th century, such associations largely forgotten, the name was revived, partly due in the 1950s and 60s to the popularity of the actress Audrey Hepburn ( 1929–93 ).

Dorothea form of a post-classical Greek name, from dōron ‘gift’ + theos ‘god’ (the same elements as in Theodora , but in reverse order). The masculine form Dorotheus was borne by several early Christian saints, the feminine by only two minor ones, but only the girl's name has survived. In modern use in the English-speaking world it represents either a 19th-century Latinization of Dorothy or a learned reborrowing.
